Reasons To Start Using Coconut Oil As Toothpaste

Last Updated on May 31, 2023 by Kapuluan

Coconut oil is one of those foods that seems to have endless uses. However, one use you may be unaware of is that it’s a fantastic base for toothpaste. Often, conventional toothpaste can be full of harmful chemicals and agents, but natural toothpaste is pricey.

So why not try making coconut oil toothpaste a healthy and inexpensive alternative?

Here are six reasons you should make the switch:

1. No harmful chemicals

One of the most significant downsides to traditional toothpaste is the harmful chemicals they contain, including fluoride, which is more toxic than lead but slightly less toxic than arsenic. There are even mandatory warning labels to seek medical care if swallowed. So, why would you brush your teeth with it if it’s not safe enough to swallow?

The beautiful thing about coconut oil as toothpaste is that it’s 100% natural (if you choose the right one), and no harmful chemicals are in it. Since it’s incredibly healthy to eat, it would benefit your health if you swallow some.

2. Antibacterial

Coconut oil is antibacterial. Think of it as Mother Nature’s mouthwash! Swishing the coconut oil in your mouth after you brush will give you the same effect as traditional mouthwash….minus the chemicals.

3. No foaming agents

A common ingredient in toothpaste is a soap called sodium lauryl sulfate. SLS is used as a foaming agent because it gives people the illusion that the toothpaste is cleaning their teeth simply because it’s foaming up.

4. Inexpensive

Using a few tablespoons of coconut oil is incredibly inexpensive and will last you months, making it the most inexpensive toothpaste you’ve ever used!

5. Your dog can use it

Coconut oil isn’t just for humans; it’s incredibly healthy for pets.

6. Easy to make

Aside from all the health benefits, coconut oil toothpaste is incredibly easy to make. All you need is an empty jar and a few ingredients:

  • Baking soda: helps with whitening and acts as an abrasive to help clean your teeth
  • Essential oils: will give your toothpaste a distinct flavor. Our favorites are peppermint, lemon, and orange.
  • Erythritol, xylitol, or stevia: They sound funny, but they are all-natural, tooth-friendly sweeteners that will enhance the flavor of your toothpaste *don’t use xylitol if you’re planning on using it for your pets — it’s safe for humans but toxic to animals.

Once you change from regular toothpaste to making your own, you may never return. However, there is nothing but positive benefits in making the switch, so why not try?
